Professors from Seoul National University College of Medicine and Seoul National University Hospital will begin an indefinite strike from tomorrow (17th) in protest against the government’s medical reform policies. Of the 967 professors from four hospitals – Seoul National University Hospital, Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul Boramae Medical Center, and Seoul National University Hospital Gangnam Center – 529 (54.7%) are expected to participate in the strike. Professors responsible for critical and emergency patients will not participate in the strike. The professors are demanding the cancellation of administrative actions against medical residents and reasonable measures to normalize the medical situation. They have stated that they would call off the strike if substantial measures are taken. The government has expressed deep regret and serious concern over the strike, while patient groups have reported growing anxiety among patients due to increased instances of denied treatment. The government and political circles are currently making last-minute mediation efforts.
