Thailand has become the third Asian country, after Nepal and Taiwan, to recognize same-sex marriage. The Thai Senate approved the Marriage Equality Act with 130 votes in favor, 4 against, and 17 abstentions. The law is set to take effect 120 days after receiving royal assent. The Marriage Equality Act ensures that same-sex couples have the same rights as opposite-sex couples. Previously, the law defined family formation as a union between a man and a woman, but the amendment redefines married couples as ¡°two individuals¡± and changes their legal status to ¡°spouses.¡± As a result, same-sex couples will be entitled to rights such as child adoption, property management and inheritance, divorce, state welfare benefits, and tax deductions. To celebrate the passage of the law, the government plans to hold a parade in downtown Bangkok.
