Richard Slayman, the first person to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, has died two months after the procedure, according to AP News. Slayman, a 62-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease, underwent the transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital in March. Doctors had expected the transplant to function for at least two years, but Slayman died unexpectedly. There were no signs of death. Slayman¡¯s family thanked the medical team for their efforts, saying that they had been able to spend precious time with him thanks to the transplant. They also said that the case had given hope to thousands of people who are waiting for organ transplants. Currently, there are over 100,000 organ transplant waiting list patients in the United States, the majority of whom are kidney patients.
