Analysis of wastewater samples collected from all wastewater treatment plants in South Korea over the past four years has revealed the presence of methamphetamine and other drug substances in every single facility. A report released by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) found that methamphetamine was detected in all wastewater samples from 17 cities across the country, while cocaine and other drugs were only detected in some. Methamphetamine levels were highest in Incheon, while cocaine levels were highest in Seoul. Based on these findings, experts have concluded that the use of illicit drugs is widespread in South Korean society.
