스위스에서 논란이 된 ‘조력 자살 캡슐’ 사르코(Sarco)의 사용이 중단되었습니다. 

외신에 따르면, 사르코 캡슐을 도입한 안락사 옹호 단체 ‘더 라스트 리조트’(The Last Resort)는 스위스 당국의 범죄 혐의 조사 이후 이 같은 결정을 내렸습니다. 지난달 기준으로 371명이 사르코 이용 신청을 했으나, 첫 사용자가 사망한 이후 절차가 중단된 상태입니다.

이 캡슐을 이용해 사망한 사건 이후, 스위스 경찰은 관련자를 자살 방조 혐의로 체포했는데요, 스위스에서는 일정한 요건을 충족할 경우 조력 자살이 처벌되지 않지만, 적극적 안락사는 허용되지 않고 있습니다.

사르코 캡슐은 사람이 들어가 버튼을 누르면 질소가 방출되어 몇 분 안에 사망하게 되는 장치입니다.

The use of the controversial ‘Sarco’ assisted capsule has been suspended in Switzerland.

According to foreign reports, the euthanasia advocacy group ‘The Last Resort,’ which introduced the Sarco capsule, made this decision following a criminal investigation by Swiss authorities. As of last month, 371 people had applied to use Sarco, but the process was halted after the first user passed away.

After the death of the first person to use the capsule, Swiss police arrested those involved on charges of assist. In Switzerland, assisted is not punishable if certain conditions are met, but active is not permitted.

The Sarco capsule is a device in which a person enters, presses a button, and nitrogen is released, causing death within minutes.
