영국 옥스퍼드 대학 출판부가 2024년 올해의 단어로 ‘뇌 썩음’(brain rot)을 뽑았습니다.

원래는 말 그대로 “단순하고 무의미한 행동이 뇌를 망친다”는 경고의 의미로 시작됐는데, 요즘은 숏폼 콘텐츠에 빠져있거나, 하찮은 정보에 과하게 노출된 모습을 표현할 때 많이 쓰인다고 해요.

옥스퍼드 대학 출판부는 “이번 단어 선정이 소셜미디어 시대에 인간의 정신적, 지적 건강에 대한 경각심을 불러일으키는 계기가 될 수 있기를 바란다”라고 전하기도 했죠.

The Oxford University Press has chosen ‘brain rot’ as the Word of the Year for 2024.

Originally, the term began as a warning, meaning “simple and meaningless actions destroy the brain.” However, it has recently been widely used to describe behaviors where people become absorbed in short-form content or are excessively exposed to trivial information.

The Oxford University Press stated, “We hope this word selection will serve as an opportunity to raise awareness about the mental and intellectual health of humanity in the social media age.”
